The History of Golf in St. Andrews
Golf has been played in St Andrews for hundreds of years. It was first recorded in 1552, but the town has been associated with the game much longer. Golf was a popular sport in the middle ages, but it was banned by the monarchy because the king thought it distracted young men from archery practice. The game grew in popularity in the 19th century, and by the beginning of the 20th, St Andrews had become known as "The Home of Golf."
In 1894, the town council passed the first Links Act, and golfers once again gained access to the courses at the St Andrews Links. Eventually, the council built two new courses, the Jubilee and Eden Courses, along with the Old Course.
Today, St Andrews is the leading destination for golfers, and the home of the game’s oldest governing body, the Royal and Ancient Club. It is a major economic driver for Fife, and an international destination for visitors to Scotland.
The golfing history of the St Andrews is a story of ups and downs. In the early days, the Old Course was a difficult place to play, with blind shots, hidden bunkers and humps and hollows. But as the sport grew in popularity, the links were improved and made easier to play. Today, the Old Course is considered one of the world’s best and most challenging courses.
Golfers come to St Andrews for many reasons, but the most important reason is to try to emulate the success of the greats who have played here. St Andrews is also the cradle of the game of polo, which has become a worldwide sport.
